Gotcha by Jer-Trow Gotcha by Jer-Trow
Finally! For those of you that watch my scraps, you would know the background.. I've always kinda wanted to catch a dragonfly mid flight and I had posted me best attempt to date the other day, (a shot of one side on) but I wanted to see the eyes! Ta-da!

I had to ride home from work the other day, left at 4ish, didn't get home till about 6:45ish, cause I kept stopping and taking photos, then, I sat by the creek near my house for at least 2/3 of that time stalking this dragonfly.. after sooo many unsuccessful attempts I decided on a new strategy... sit and wait for him to come to me.. It worked!! Twice he hovered just over a meter and a half from me (the close focus distance of my lense, not my macro, not enough reach) and both times I shot like crazy, I got 3 I liked, and I really had no idea which I liked best.. so I blindly chose..

The other two are here and here.

most definately - i think i got one shot out of 3 rolls that came close to being ok...but the dragonfly was too small in the pic....and i had low flash sync as it was only the eos5 body and 540ez flash.....!!

That's spectacular!

For composition, I like the first of the other two you posted on Photobucket, where he's flying almost directly at you and there are some contrasting colours in the background... but this one is definitely the sharpest action shot.

thanks so much Brenda :) and doubly for the :+fav:

It was such a difficult choice, in the end it was between the one you said and this one.. i chose this because you could see the whole body better.. not much of a reason =P

thanks for ur opinion, i'm glad someone looked at the other pics ;)

nice capture :) I was also trying to catch them but I know I have to wait for saome better lens - Sigma 70-300 is not enough I think... What lens did you use?... 190mm what kind of that is?
Reply
:iconjer-trow:
Jer-Trow Featured By Owner Oct 14, 2006
i dont know much about the Sigma 70-300.. I know canon lenses like the back of my hand though ;)

I used a 70-200mm f2.8L, I chose it over my macro because of it's speed, but also its reach, my macro is a 100mm f2.8, so without that extra 90mm it would have looked a lot smaller.. and plus the macro is a lot slower..

I'm glad you like it, catching a dragon fly in flight is something i would never have dreamt of with my old lense, they are just one thing where ur equipment is half the shot
